G1000 Basics for First-Time Users
Think of the G1000 as two screens: the left screen helps you fly the airplane; the right screen helps you manage the flight.
PFD and MFD
PFD: Primary Flight Display
The PFD is your main flying screen. It shows attitude, airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, heading, nav source, course needle, and important alerts.
MFD: Multi Function Display
The MFD usually shows the moving map, flight plan, nearest airports, engine/system information, and procedure pages.
Core Tasks
Direct-To Navigation
Press Direct-To, enter or select the waypoint, confirm it is the correct airport/fix, then activate. Use this for simple point-to-point navigation.
Flight Plan Entry
Open the flight plan page, add the departure airport, route fixes, and destination. Check the magenta line before takeoff.
Loading an Approach
Use PROC, choose the approach, choose transition or vectors, then Load. Loading prepares the procedure; activating tells the unit to navigate it now.
CDI Source Selection
Use the CDI softkey to choose GPS or a NAV radio source. GPS guidance is usually magenta. VOR/localizer guidance is usually green.
OBS Mode
OBS lets you manually set a course to or from a waypoint, similar to choosing a VOR course. Use it for holds, course intercepts, and instructor-directed practice.
Approach Practice Tip
Before starting an approach, confirm three things out loud: the correct approach is loaded, the correct CDI source is selected, and the autopilot or hand-flying plan matches the source.
