Redbird TD2 FAQ

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers for common customer questions. For logbook credit, always confirm with your instructor and the current device authorization.

Can I log instrument time?

Often yes when the session meets FAA rules and the proper record is kept. Confirm your exact situation before relying on it.

Can I log PIC time?

Do not log TD2 time as airplane PIC flight time. Use the appropriate simulator/device columns.

Can I use it for instrument currency?

FAA rules allow ATDs for certain instrument recency tasks when the required tasks and records are completed.

Do I need an instructor?

For some goals yes, especially training time or certificate/rating credit. Solo practice may still be valuable but may not meet every logging requirement.

Can I practice checkrides?

Yes, it is useful for flows, approaches, holds, emergencies, and workload management. It does not replace required aircraft tasks.

Can I save a flight?

Navigator supports saved flights. Save useful setups with clear names and tags.

Can I pause the simulator?

Yes. Pause when briefing, fixing a setup issue, or discussing a procedure.

Can I fly approaches?

Yes. You can practice ILS, VOR/LOC, RNAV/GPS, and missed approach procedures depending on the configured aircraft/avionics.

Can I fail an instrument?

Failures may be available through instructor/staff tools or scenario controls. Ask staff if you need a specific failure.

Can I use ForeFlight?

Possibly if the simulator is configured with compatible output such as Redbird Corvus/Connect. Ask staff for the current setup.

Can I change aircraft configuration?

Some TD/TD2 Free Flight options may include high performance, retractable gear, or constant-speed propeller. Use the configuration that matches your training goal.

Can I fly at night?

Yes. Set time of day to night or dusk for lighting and instrument scan practice.

Can I change the wind?

Yes. Use Free Flight weather settings before starting the flight.

Can I add gusts?

Yes, if the weather panel includes gust settings. Start light before adding strong gusts.

Can I add turbulence?

Yes. Use light or moderate turbulence after you can fly the procedure in calm air.

Can I set low ceilings?

Yes. Set cloud coverage to broken or overcast and choose an appropriate cloud base.

Can I set visibility?

Yes. Lower visibility for IFR or marginal VFR practice.

Can I practice holds?

Yes. Use the G1000 flight plan/OBS or a navaid setup and brief entries before starting.

Can I practice missed approaches?

Yes. Load the approach, set weather below minimums, and fly the published missed.

Can I practice emergencies?

Yes, but choose one emergency at a time. Use instructor/staff assistance for complex failures.

Can I practice radio calls?

Yes. Chair-fly the calls aloud even if no live ATC is connected.

Can I practice VFR patterns?

Yes. Use clear weather and a runway start.

Can I start in the air?

Yes. Free Flight can start airborne for approaches, intercepts, or airwork.

Can I start on a runway?

Yes. Choose airport and runway from Free Flight.

Can I use a saved flight from another customer?

Use only flights intended for shared use. Avoid deleting or changing someone else’s saved scenario.

What if the controls do not work?

Check Navigator device status. If required devices are not green, notify staff.

What if the flight starts paused?

Use the pause/unpause control in Navigator or the assigned pause key.

What if the airplane is hard to trim?

Set pitch and power first, then trim in small movements.

What if the autopilot behaves unexpectedly?

Disconnect if needed, hand-fly, then verify CDI source and active modes.

What does CDI mean?

Course Deviation Indicator. It shows whether you are left or right of the selected course.

When should I use GPS CDI?

Use GPS for magenta-line GPS navigation and RNAV practice.

When should I use NAV/LOC CDI?

Use NAV/LOC for VOR, localizer, or ILS practice with a tuned frequency.

What is OBS mode?

OBS lets you manually select a course to/from a GPS waypoint, useful for holds and intercepts.

What is the PFD?

The left primary screen showing attitude, airspeed, altitude, heading, and nav guidance.

What is the MFD?

The map/system screen used for flight planning, maps, nearest pages, and system information.

Can I load an approach without activating it?

Yes. Loading prepares it. Activating tells the G1000 to start navigating it now.

Should I use vectors-to-final?

Use it when practicing ATC-style vectors. Use an IAF/transition when practicing the full published procedure.

Can I practice crosswind landings?

Yes. Set wind 30 to 60 degrees off the runway heading and start with moderate speeds.

Can I practice stalls?

Use only if appropriate for the simulator profile and your training objective. Brief recovery first.

Can I practice commercial maneuvers?

You can practice scan, flows, and procedures, but verify what credit applies.

Can I bring my instructor?

Yes, and an instructor is recommended when the goal is loggable training or proficiency signoff.

Can student pilots use it?

Yes. It is useful for checklists, scan, radio practice, pattern work, and instrument introduction.

Can instrument pilots use it?

Yes. It is especially useful for approaches, holds, missed approaches, and avionics practice.

Can I use it before my real flight lesson?

Yes. Practice flows and avionics before the aircraft lesson to reduce cockpit workload.

Does it replace aircraft training?

No. It supports training and proficiency but does not replace aircraft tasks that must be done in an airplane.

Can I print this guide?

You can print pages from your browser, but the guide is designed for phone/tablet use at the simulator.

What should I do after a session?

End the flight, leave controls in a normal position, collect your items, and record any logbook details while fresh.

Who do I ask for help?

Use the troubleshooting page first. If the simulator still does not behave normally, contact LTS staff.

Can I change admin settings?

No. Customer sessions should not change simulator admin settings, passwords, updates, or device configuration.
